Georgetown Lombardi’s Louis M. Weiner, MD, Named a National Academy of Inventors Fellow

WASHINGTON (December 11, 2018) — The National Academy of Inventors (NAI) has named Louis M. Weiner, MD, director of Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, to its 2018 class of fellows.
According to the NAI, election to NAI Fellow status is the “highest professional distinction accorded to academic inventors who have demonstrated a prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development and the welfare of society.”
“I am inspired by the accomplishments of my 2018 NAI fellows and am humbled to join this class of fine scientists,” says Weiner, professor and chair of the department of oncology. “The NAI’s goal of recognizing and encouraging inventions for the betterment of human health makes this a special honor.”
An internationally recognized medical oncologist specializing in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancers, Weiner is also an accomplished researcher developing novel immunotherapy treatments in his laboratory. He is recognized for his laboratory and clinical research focusing on new therapeutic approaches that mobilize the patient’s immune system to fight cancer using monoclonal antibodies — laboratory-crafted proteins designed to recognize specific cancer cells. His current work focuses on understanding why tumors become resistant to therapy using monoclonal antibodies and other forms of cancer immunotherapy with the goal of developing new treatments to overcome that resistance.
Weiner also serves as director of the MedStar Georgetown Cancer Institute, which combines medical expertise, the latest therapies, and research across MedStar Health throughout the region. Certified in internal medicine and medical oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, Dr. Weiner has published more than 200 scientific papers.
Weiner earned his bachelor’s degree in biology with honors from the University of Pennsylvania and his medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine at New York University. After completing his internship, residency and service as chief medical resident at the University of Vermont Medical Center Hospital, he held clinical and research fellowships in hematology and oncology at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston.
The other 2018 fellows will be inducted at the Space Center Houston in April at the 8th Annual Meeting of the NAI.
Included among this year’s NAI Fellows are five recipients of the U.S. National Medal of Technology & Innovation and U.S. National Medal of Science; three Nobel Laureates; two inductees of the National Inventors Hall of Fame; 59 members of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine; more than 25 presidents and senior leaders of research universities and non-profit research institutes; 43 AAAS Fellows; 32 IEEE Fellows; and 22 Fellows of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, among other awards and distinctions.
