Two GUMC physician scientists received extraordinary national recognition and support for their scientific work:
Jeffrey Toretsky, MD, Associate Professor, Department of Oncology at the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, has received a 2008 Clinical Scientist Award in Translational Research from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund (BWF). The $750,000 award, one of only 13 given in 2008, is “intended to support established, independent physician-scientists who are dedicated to translational research—the two-way transfer between laboratory research and patient treatment—and mentoring physician-scientist trainees.”

Zofia Zukowska, MD, PhD, Professor and Chair, Department of Physiology and Biophysics, received a 2008 MERIT award, one of the most prestigious awards given by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The National Heart, Blood, and Lung Institute (NHLBI) offers a limited number of Method to Extend Research in Time, or MERIT, Awards to investigators “who have demonstrated superior competence and outstanding productivity during their previous research endeavors in areas related to heart, lung, or blood research and who are likely to continue to perform in an outstanding manner in the future.”

The MAGIS Society of Master Teachers

The MAGIS Society of Master Teachers honors physicians and biomedical scientists dedicated to the care of others and society. MAGIS, Latin for “more greatly” is a shoretened form of ad majorem Dei gloriam or “towards the greater glory of God.”

The Kaiser-Permanente Award

The Dorothy Brown Undergraduate Education Award
