MAY 18, 2015—Just days before graduating from Georgetown’s School of Medicine, excited students and their proud families gathered for the Warwick Evans Award Ceremony in Healy Hall May 15.
The Warwick Evans Award Ceremony honors excellence in basic sciences and clinical departments, as well as exceptional achievement in academic performance, service and leadership within the graduating class at the School of Medicine.
A Class of Healers
Guest speaker Carlo Tornatore, MD , associate professor and vice chairman of the department of neurology, reminded students that the School of Medicine faculty has not just taught them how to be doctors, but how to be healers.
Unlike many speakers charged with the task of addressing graduates, Tornatore declined to give the assembled students any specific advice.
“I’m here today not to give you parting advice,” said Tornatore, “but to remind you of what you have already been taught, and that you forget at your own peril. You, my children, are healers.”
Georgetown Will Serve As “Our Compass”
Mark Norton, the student speaker at the ceremony, reminded his peers of the unique challenges that each year of medical school entailed, noting that “medical school is no joke.”
“We not only found the strength to just survive, but we found the strength to excel,” said Norton.
Norton listed the accomplishments of the Class of 2015, including groundbreaking research and publications, 6,736 hours of community service and even a powder puff football victory over the first year medical students.
“As we move across the country to pursue our careers, the fundamentals that we have gained from Georgetown will serve as our compass to becoming great physicians,” said Norton.
