Health Sciences Strategy Initiative
Dear Members of the Georgetown Community:
In 2019, President DeGioia launched the Health Sciences Strategy Initiative (HSSI), designed to review and assess Georgetown’s health sciences contributions, define our future, and rethink our ways of working. The HSSI charge was to be aspirational, reflective, future-focused, and encompass the university.
The HSSI scope and arc of work was completed in 2024 with the execution of workstreams continuing today.
The first phase of HSSI was completed in 2022 with the sunsetting of the School of Nursing & Health Studies, and the launch of the School of Health and School of Nursing.
Phase II was aimed to enhance Georgetown’s impact in all areas of health and health sciences, unify campuses, strengthen the financial excellence of GUMC, foster partnerships, and the recruitment of an Executive Vice President of Health Sciences.
Included in this work:
- Working to ensure renewal of the NCI Cancer Center Support Grant for Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center – successfully received in 2024 spanning 5 years;
- Recruitmenting four new tenure-line faculty conducting basic, translational, clinical, and population research as part of a multi-departmental “cluster” hire. The focus of the first cluster is integrative approaches to neuroplasticity across the lifespan;
- Establishing of the Joint Office of Research Administration (JORA) that aims to promote interdisciplinary opportunities;
- Modernizing the faculty performance and compensation plan to better reward performance;
- Focusing on financial success – to examine the necessary resources to sustain and grow GUMC’s mission; and
- Obtaining a significant new investment in Medical Center infrastructure, totaling $113M, planned between Fiscal Year 2022 and 2026 including a proposed renovation of part of the basic science building.
Remaining workstreams include:
- Integrating Biomedical Sciences and Graduate Education into the School of Medicine;
- Strategically increasing philanthropic investments in GUMC, highlighted by a new position –Vice President for GUMC Advancement – and the restructuring of advancement as it relates to GUMC; and
- Strengthening our academic health system partnership with MedStar Health to advance clinical research, education, and community service.
