Adams-Campbell Joins the National Human Genome Research Institute Board of Scientific Counselors

September 14, 2016 – Lucile L. Adams-Campbell, PhD, associate director of minority health and health disparities research and professor of oncology at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, has begun serving on the Board of Scientific Counselors (BSC) for the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI).

As a member of the BSC, Adams-Campbell, along with her colleagues, will evaluate scientists and their programs for the NHGRI Division of Intramural Research, working with Eric Green, MD, PhD, NHGRI director and Dan Kastner, MD, PhD, NHGRI scientific director and director of the division of intramural research.

The BSC is the only official group of outside scientists who systematically review NHGRI’s intramural program and advise the NHGRI scientific director, according to Michael M. Gottesman, MD, NHGRI deputy director for intramural research. Gottesman invited Adams-Campbell to serve on the BSC on behalf of NIH director Francis Collins, MD, PhD.

“I believe that rigorous review is vital to maintaining the excellence of any scientific program,” Gottesman wrote in his invitation to Adams-Campbell. “NIH Boards of Scientific Counselors provide exactly this kind of review for the intramural programs. The Boards are extremely important in contributing to the continued excellence of the scientific research being done at NIH.”

Before it was designated as a research institute by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in 1997, NHGRI was established in 1989 as the National Center for Human Genome Research to carry out the NIH’s role in the International Human Genome Project to map the human genome. Since the completion of the human genome sequence in 2003, scientists worldwide have had access to a database that has accelerated the pace of biomedical research, thanks in part to the work of researchers at NHGRI.  

“I feel honored by this invitation and am looking forward to supporting NHGRI’s groundbreaking intramural research,” Adams-Campbell said. She will serve on the BSC through June 30, 2021.
