Giuseppe Giaccone Joins Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center

WASHINGTON — Internationally recognized lung cancer expert Giuseppe Giaccone, MD, PhD, has joined Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, a part of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and Georgetown University Medical Center.
Giaccone serves as associate director for clinical research at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, co-leader of its experimental therapeutics program and director of the lung cancer program. He is also director of clinical research for the MedStar Georgetown Cancer Network, a clinical affiliation between MedStar Health and Georgetown Lombardi that combines and expands the strengths of clinical care and research to significantly improve patient access to cancer services. His joint appointment with Georgetown Lombardi and MedStar Health enhances the current expansion of cancer clinical services in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
Giaccone previously was chief of the National Cancer Institute’s Center for Cancer Research’s Medical Oncology Branch. He is credited with helping transform the NCI branch through reorganization of its clinical infrastructure and recruitment of strong faculty.
“Dr. Giaccone has a tremendous reputation for building and leading world-class clinical and research programs — an asset that holds particular value as we grow the MedStar Georgetown Cancer Network,” says Louis M. Weiner, M.D., director of Georgetown Lombardi. “His contributions to Georgetown Lombardi and MedStar Health will allow the Network to expand its clinical research base, providing greater access for our patients to novel clinical trials and state-of-the-art treatments.”
Giaccone says his drive for nurturing new programs is grounded in his personal research pursuits.
“Over the past several years, my main interest has been early clinical research — bridging the gap between laboratory and clinical research — and applying cutting-edge technologies in that effort,” says Giaccone, who is also a recognized expert in developing early stage clinical trials. “I am particularly interested in bringing new anticancer agents from the laboratory to the clinic in an effort to improve the treatment of lung cancer and other solid tumors.”
In addition to his experience studying new anticancer agents, Giaccone is an expert in the biology and treatment of lung cancer, thymomas and other solid tumors.
A native of Italy, Giaccone received his MD from the University Torino Medical School in Torino, Italy, and his PhD from Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. He conducted his residency at University Medical School in Torino and completed his internship at the Institute of Oncology in Torino.
Giaccone serves on the editorial boards of many medical and scientific journals, including Clinical Cancer Research, Frontiers in Oncology, Annals of Oncology and Investigational New Drugs. He has received numerous awards for his research and service in the field of oncology. Among them, he received the NDDO Honorary Award (2011), NCI Director’s Award (2010), and the Ihde Memorial Lecture (2009). A frequent guest lecturer and prolific contributor to scientific and medical publications, Giaccone has served in many organizational leadership roles including member of the board of the EORTC (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer) and chair of its lung cancer group, chair of the lung cancer intramural program at NCI, and president of the TAT (Targeted Anticancer Therapies) series of symposia.
