Strides of Support – the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer

Posted in GUMC Stories

It’s time to lace up your sneakers and join this year’s Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. The Georgetown Lombardi-Capital Breast Care Center Team is looking to increase strides with overwhelming participation on the 10th anniversary of the Avon Walk, to be held May 5-6, 2012.

It is through Avon Foundation support that Capital Breast Care Center (CBCC) opened its doors in Southeast DC eight years ago. With the generous support of the Avon Walk, CBCC has offered services to over 8,000 patients.

Walkers will participate in the 39-mile, two-day walk with thousands of others from around the world. You can walk it all, or walk as much as you can, with sections of the course divided by break points and day.

“Our team is a team in every sense of the word. We have meetings, provide support to all those raising funds, and have group training sessions for walkers. We need support to reach our $100,000 goal, and we support our team members in return so they can meet their individual fundraising goals,” says Jeanne Mandelblatt, M.D., MPH, Lombardi/CBCC Team Leader.

With every footstep, and mile walked, participants directly assist patients. Last year the Georgetown Lombardi-Capital Breast Care Center Team comprised over 40 walkers, and raised more than $80,000 in prevention and continued care. This year the team hopes to exceed its $100,000 goal, and is looking for your support, donations, cheers, miles, sweat, and smiles!
