Georgetown University Medical Center Names Cancer Expert as Dean for Research
Georgetown University Medical Center has named Robert Clarke, Ph.D., D.Sc., as its Dean for Research. The new position will lead GUMC’s high performance research community and is a critical first step in the implementation of its strategic planning initiative launched in 2008.

GUMC Awarded Grant to Develop Smoking Cessation Aids Based on Unconventional Theory of Nicotine Addiction
A Georgetown University Medical Center research team has been awarded a grant from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to discover and develop new smoking cessation drugs based on an unconventional theory about nicotine addiction. Kenneth Kellar, PhD, a professor of pharmacology at GUMC is principal investigator of the five year grant totaling $4.6 million.

Georgetown University Medical Center Receives More than $28 Million in Grants From ARRA
Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) has received millions in research awards made possible by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). To date, 35 scientists and physicians representing a diverse cross-section of biomedical research at GUMC have received $28.9 million in stimulus funding. The ARRA funding program commenced in 2009 and final grants were awarded in September 2010. In addition to funding important laboratory research, ARRA grants have allowed researchers to support, new full and part time jobs, many of which are permanent.

NIH Awards $6.1 Million Grant to GUMC to Establish Center of Excellence for Health Disparities
The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has awarded a $6.1 million grant over the next five years to Georgetown University Medical Center to establish the Center of Excellence for Health Disparities in Our Nation’s Capital (CEHD). The vision of the Center of Excellence is to eliminate or dramatically reduce health disparities with a particular focus on minority populations in Washington, D.C.
