Antioxidants Can Protect Against Omega 6 Damage – or Promote It
SAN DIEGO — Given omega 6 fatty acid’s reputation for promoting cancer — at least in animal studies — researchers are examining the role that antioxidants play in blocking the harmful effects of this culprit, found in many cooking oils. After all, antioxidants are supposed to prevent DNA damage. But employing antioxidants could backfire, say researchers at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center.

GUMC Professor Assumes Presidency of Society of Interventional Radiology
WASHINGTON—James B. Spies, MD, MPH, FSIR, professor of radiology at Georgetown University School of Medicine and chairman of the department of radiology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, is the new president of the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR). He assumed the one-year term March 26 during SIR’s 38th Annual Scientific Meeting in San Diego.

Primary Androgen Deprivation Therapy Ineffective for Most Men with Early Prostate Cancer
WASHINGTON — A study of more than 15,000 men with early stage prostate cancer finds that those who received androgen deprivation as their primary treatment instead of surgery or radiation did not live any longer than those who received no treatment.

Former FDA Chief Scientist Jesse L. Goodman Joins Georgetown
WASHINGTON – Georgetown University Medical Center has appointed Jesse L. Goodman, MD, MPH, as founding director of its Center on Medical Product Access, Safety and Stewardship (COMPASS). Likely so, say researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center who have shown that a small region within the amygdala, an almond-shaped structure in the brains of all mammals, is responsible for producing emotional calls and sounds. They say this discovery might be key to locating a similar center in human brains.

55 Genes Linked to a Powerful Tumor Suppressor Predict Breast Cancer Survival

Genetic Counseling Via Telephone as Effective as In-person Counseling
WASHINGTON — Genetic counseling delivered over the telephone is as effective as face-to-face counseling, finds the largest randomized study to date comparing the two methods. The multi-center study, led by researchers at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, was reported today in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
