WASHINGTON (September 18, 2018) — Georgetown University Medical Center has named Subha Madhavan, PhD, as its Chief Data Scientist and director of its newly established Office for Health Data Science and Informatics.
“This new and important office and faculty leadership position elevates the Medical Center’s commitment to the large and all-encompassing field of digital health and scientific big data,” says Edward B. Healton, MD, MPH, Executive Vice President for Health Sciences at Georgetown University Medical Center and Executive Dean of its School of Medicine.
Madhavan, associate professor in the Department of Oncology, also serves as director of the Innovation Center for Biomedical Informatics (ICBI) at Georgetown.
“I am humbled and thrilled to lead a team of data scientists and informaticians at Georgetown who, in partnership with clinical leaders and health care innovators, will advance computational big data science in clinical practice, research and education — in support of precision health for all,” says Madhavan.
“Our main objective is to harness the power of information from multiple disparate data sources using advanced techniques such as machine learning and artificial intelligence to produce novel, actionable insights,” she adds. “In this role, I will work to develop our data science enterprise with a foundation on interdisciplinary teams and groups.”
As Chief Data Scientist, Madhavan’s portfolio includes informatics and health data science-related research and educational programs at the university, and collaborative opportunities with industry partners. As a first priority, with preliminary work well underway, Madhavan will lead the effort to develop a master’s program, Health Informatics & Data Science, at Georgetown in collaboration with departments across campus as well as with Georgetown’s clinical partner, MedStar Health, to focus on current and emerging topics, such as digital health, precision medicine informatics and health data science approaches to leverage big data to advance health care and improve outcomes.
In addition, as Chief Data Scientist, Madhavan will help develop partnerships with life sciences and health care and information technology industries to develop and implement informatics products and services, as well as cultivating university partnerships with external research organizations such as the national labs and federal research and development agencies.
“Dr. Madhavan’s leadership and expertise can be transformational and will be of immense benefit,” Healton adds.
