(September 23, 2021) — MedStar Health and Georgetown University Medical Center honored more than three dozen faculty members for their achievements leading to recent promotions to associate professor or professor. The virtual celebration on September 22 was hosted by Edward B. Healton, MD, MPH, executive vice president of health sciences at GUMC, and Stephen R. T. Evans, MD, executive vice president for medical affairs and chief medical officer for MedStar Health.
In its fourth year, the joint celebration underscored the deepening connections between the university and the academic health system.
Healton kicked off the program by emphasizing the “broad palette” of work across many domains, “ranging from the basic science, laboratory-based research to exceptional achievement in education and creating education programs — being deeply involved in education of students and residents and our peers — to the applied and translational work and research.”
He also highlighted the common values and common good evident in the faculty’s work. “I think it is more prevalent… and more obvious here at Georgetown.”
Before turning the program over to Evans, Healton noted the work happening on the Academic Leadership Council, an advisory group comprising members from MedStar Heath and GUMC, and its important strategic planning for the interconnectedness of the academic health system. The work is “intended to take us ever more deeply into all the ways that the partnership can be mutually beneficial,” Healton said.
Evans acknowledged not only the faculty’s sacrifice of time, but also that of their families. “There are tons of really smart people that don’t have the passion and the energy to actually move to action, to create the kinds of things that we value within an academic health system and within Georgetown University,” he said. “And so you’ve gotten those and accomplished those.”
