School of Medicine Students Embrace Cura Personalis Through Camp

August 1, 2017—For the last five years, incoming first and second-year Georgetown School of Medicine students have lived the spirit of cura personalis by planning and running a sports camp for homeless children living in the DC General Family Shelter.

“Trying new things and sharing in the laughter of the week requires a certain trust that these kids don’t often get to develop in the chaotic environment of a family shelter,” said Jessica Haladyna (M’20), camp director. “Camp isn’t about the games that we play, but the sportsmanship and teamwork that grow into long-lasting friendships and life lessons.”

The HoyaMed Summer Sports camp took place July 24-28 on a field next to a skating rink in Anacostia Park. Campers enjoyed games including Sharks and Minnows, potato sack races, basketball and soccer.

This year, campers got to dance with Culture Shock D.C., a nonprofit hip-hop dance organization dedicated to community engagement. They also enjoyed a visit from Georgetown University football players.

About 30 kids came to camp throughout the week, and 25 incoming first-year medical students served as counselors, with help from second-year coordinators.
