Georgetown University School of Medicine Celebrates 40th Anniversary of GEMS

WASHINGTON (July 12, 2017) — Georgetown University School of Medicine is marking four decades of its Georgetown Experimental Medical Studies (GEMS), a one-year, non-degree, post-baccalaureate program for disadvantaged students interested in pursuing a career in medicine, with the 40th Anniversary GEMS Gala, Thursday, July 20 at the Fairmont Hotel.
For 40 years, the GEMS program has been identifying medical school candidates from populations underrepresented in medicine and preparing them to become exceptional physicians. Of the more than 700 students who have attended GEMS since its founding 1977-78 class, 75 percent are now physicians, current medical students, or medical school applicants. Since 2005, GEMS alumni pursuing an MD have graduated from medical school at a near perfect rate of 98.6 percent.
