Georgetown University Medical Students honor Aykut Uren, at Golden Apple Awards Ceremony

Georgetown University School of Medicine hosted the 32nd annual Golden Apple Awards ceremony. This event was held at the Key Bridge Marriott in Arlington, Va., on Saturday, March 13, with a dinner, awards, speeches and dancing.
The Golden Apple Award is presented annually by each class to a member of the faculty or staff whose outstanding professional and personal qualities have had an impact on the members of every class. After a nomination in 2009, Aykut Uren, assistant professor of oncology, received his first Golden Apple at this year’s ceremony from the class of 2013. Mary Furlong, assistant professor of Pathology received the Golden Apple from the class of 2012.
“I really like teaching,” says Uren. “Ever since I came to Georgetown I have looked for opportunities to teach. I put in extra time to prepare and I meet with my students after hours and on weekends. I come in pretty much every weekend to meet with them. So it’s good to see that they appreciate what I’m trying to do.”
Uren also received the Geza M. Illes Award for “an outstanding first year teacher who serves as an inspirational role model in the field of gross anatomy.” He has been teaching gross anatomy for 4 years at Georgetown University. This is the third consecutive year he has won the award.
“I try to remember when I was a medical student and how it was taught to me. How I would like these lectures to be taught to me if I was a student. So I’m trying to put myself into their position, where I was 20 years ago.”
Uren also received a nomination for Physiology Teacher of the year.

The recipient of the John C. Rose Award went to Valerie Johnson, the Mother of Pearl Award to James Benson, Physiology Teacher of the Year to Charles Read, and Cura Personalis to Omar Shah and Hahn Soe-Lin.
