O'Neill Comments on Breast Cancer Study Citing Need for Improved Communication in Breast Cancer Recurrence Risk

March 15, 2010

A new study published in Cancer investigated patients' reactions to a genomic test that estimates the risk for breast cancer recurrence. According to the study, women with early stage breast cancer recall the results of a genomic test that estimates risk for recurrence, however, a quarter of the women experienced distress from the test. The study also suggests a need to improve the processes involved in risk communication and treatment decisions.

"The variables that were assessed are amenable to intervention, which is very helpful for clinicians and researchers in this area.... In the future, we will be able to follow patients from the time of their diagnosis and determine whether variables such as these are related to long-term quality of life," said Suzanne O'Neill, faculty member in the Cancer Control Program at Lombardi.
