Dr. Howard Federoff Updates GUMC Community at Town Hall Meeting
September 9, 2009
On Thursday, Sept. 3, Howard J. Federoff, Executive Vice President for Health Sciences, held a town hall meeting for faculty and staff to update the GUMC community on recent news and to offer an update on the Strategic Planning Initiative (SPI). The town hall meeting was held in the New Research Building Auditorium.
In addition to welcoming the latest medical, nursing and graduate classes to campus for the 2009-10 school year, Federoff also congratulated GUMC faculty members on their efforts to obtain funding via the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). While the awards have only just begun to come in, GUMC faculty have so far received approximately $5.5 million in federal grants through the program, which is funded by the 2009 stimulus act signed by Congress.
Federoff also updated the community on the Strategic Planning Initiative, which started last spring. While the plan is still being finalized, Federoff shared with the community five strategies which will begin implementation later this year or early in 2010. These are:
- Align GUMC research portfolio with an ensemble/ team science approach
- Create, measure and reward high performance faculty
- Create an innovative educational environment
- Introduce a systems medicine approach across GUMC; and,
- Enhance communication and engagement of faulty in institutional governance and strategic initiative.
“President DeGioia has seen the strategic planning initiative and has shared positive sentiments about the plan,” said Federoff. “Next steps will secure institutional approval to advance the implementation of the plan.”
Following the presentation, members of the audience were invited to ask questions regarding the plan. The next town hall meeting will be scheduled in late fall; stay tuned to the GUMC Update for more information regarding SPI.
