GUMC Announces Edmund D. Pellegrino, M.D, as Keynote Speaker at GUMC Convocation

Howard J. Federoff, M.D., Ph.D., Executive Vice President for Health Sciences and Executive Dean of the School of Medicine, announced the second annual GUMC Convocation featuring keynote speaker, Edmund D. Pellegrino, on Sept. 22.

“This event will bring together GUMC students, faculty and staff in a unified forum to kick-off the academic year and will offer an opportunity to celebrate as a campus while recognizing the uniqueness of our sectors, programs, and departments,” Federoff said.

The afternoon session, scheduled at 3:00 in the New Research Building Auditorium, will feature an academic procession and a faculty award ceremony. In addition, GUMC will recognize Edmund D. Pellegrino, M.D., who is being welcomed back to Georgetown after serving on the President's Council on Bioethics. University President, John J. DeGioia will join the academic procession and will introduce Dr. Pellegrino.

During the morning, there will be a panel discussion with Dr. Pellegrino. The panel will be moderated by Howard J. Federoff, and will include Kevin FitzGerald, S.J., Ph.D., Research Associate Professor in the Division of Biochemistry and Pharmacology, Mark Smith, M.D., Department Chair in Emergency Medicine, Elliot Crooke, Ph.D., Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology, and John Deeken, M.D., Assistant Professor, Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center.

At 89, Dr. Pellegrino is the John Carroll Professor Emeritus of Medicine at GUMC. Author of more than 500 publications, he best known for his discussions of Christian virtue and medical ethics in the treatment of patients, humanism and the physician, and the philosophical basis of medical treatment. Appointed by President George W. Bush, he recently completed a four-year term as chairman of the President's Council on Bioethics.
