Three Inducted to Prestigious MAGIS Society of Master Teachers
May 14, 2009
The MAGIS Society of Master Teachers was founded by Stephen Ray Mitchell, dean of medical education, in 2003. The society was established to honor physicians and biomedical scientists dedicated to the care of others and the health needs of our society. After nearly 400 votes were cast, three members were added to this prestigious group of doctors. They are: Willard Barnes, professor of obstetrics and gynecology; John H. Lynch, professor and chairman in the Department of Urology; and, Carlos Suarez Quian, professor of biochemistry and molecular & cellular biology.
“Tonight, we are here to recognize those Master Teachers in the field of medicine,” said Howard J. Federoff, Executive Vice President for Health Sciences and Executive Dean, “and to honor them for their service and dedication to Georgetown.”
In order to be considered for induction to the MAGIS society, candidates must have been employed by Georgetown University for over 20 years. “Master Teachers are our role models, are educators, our mentors, our heroes,” said Stephen Ray Mitchell. “They strive for excellence in all their activities and give selflessly to their students, their colleagues and their patients. They exemplify what our medical center intends in the creation of the MAGIS Society.”
In addition to celebrating new inductees to the MAGIS Society, other awards were given to recognize outstanding faculty:
•Excellence in Basic Science Teaching; Barbara Bayer, professor and chair of the Department of Neuroscience and to David Nelson, professor of pediatrics
•Leonard Tow Humanism Award in Medicine; Aziza T. Shad, professor and chief of the Department of Pediatrics
•Circle Grant; Michelle A. Roett, assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine; Maria Marquez, instructor in the Department of Pediatrics; Carlos Suarez-Quain, professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology; and, Donna Cameron, assistant professor of the Department of Family Medicine
•Mother of Pearls; Ram Srinivasan, resident in the Department of Medicine.
Following the ceremony, a reception was held for MAGIS members, friends and family in the Lombardi Auditorium. For more information on the MAGIS Society, please click here.
