Health Care Reform Symposium

April 2, 2009

On March 19th the Center for Clinical Bioethics hosted a Health Care Reform Symposium in conjunction with the John Collins Harvey Lecture. This symposium focused on health care reform initiatives with emphasis on U.S. and Canada.

Robert J. Barnet, MD, MA, senior research scholar at the Center, presented a framework for the discussion. Panelist, Dennis McIntyre, MD, Natalie Kontakos, MD, and John Ring, MD responded to the issues raised.

Dr. McIntrye is associate medical director, Georgetown University Hospital, a former medical director for Kaiser Permanente (as well as a staff pediatrician), a medical director at Blue Cross Blue Shield and Aetna, a director of patient care and professional services for the Indian Health Services (IHS) and has seven years experience as a management consultant.

Dr. Kontakos is a family practitioner and palliative care physician, who trained and practiced in Canada before coming to the United States to work with Capitol Hospice. She brought her favorable experiences with the Canadian Health Care Program to the session.

Dr. Ring is director of policy research and development at the American Heart Association (AHA). Dr. Ring is a pediatrician, was a Robert Wood Johnson Fellow in 2004-2005 (Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions).

The formal presentation was followed by a lengthy and spirited question and answer period with the audience. An open and informative discussion covering multiple issues took place. It was apparent that the issues are complex and that a continuing dialogue is needed.
