Peshkin Talks about a Patient’s Choice

February 3, 2009

Senior Genetic Counselor Beth Peshkin appeared on National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered” to comment for a story about the implications of a genetic screening and a patient’s risk for ovarian cancer. Peshkin spoke about the uncertainties inherent to most genetic testing results, and the hard choices patients have to make in the face of this uncertainty.

“In this case, it really came down to it doesn't look as though, based on your family history or your test result, that you're at increased risk for ovarian cancer. But you're very worried about this disease. There isn't good screening for this disease. We can't tell you conclusively what your risk is, so it really did have to be her decision,” Peshkin told National Public Radio.
