Georgetown University Medical Center Hosts Inaugural Baldev R. Bhussry Lecture
December 3, 2008

Even though times may change with new technology, the need for knowledge and collaboration doesn't diminish. In memoriam of the late Dr. Baldev R. Bhussry, the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology hosted the inaugural presentation of the lectureship series bearing his name on December 3.
After joining the Georgetown faculty in 1957, Dr. Bhussry was chair of the Department of Anatomy from 1963 and a leader at School of Medicine and Dentistry until his death in 1980.
Initally, the Baldev R. Bhussry Memorial Fund, housed in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology, supported the department library with journal subscriptions and binding. However, as printed materials have become increasingly available electronically, the department's needs have changed.
"We are very grateful that Mrs. Greenwood allowed us to create the Baldev R. Bhussry Seminar and Lecture Series as a means to best continue the purpose of the fund, which is to enhance the educational and research missions of the department," said Elliott Crooke, chair and professor of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology, as he welcomed the crowd in the Research Auditorium.
As the featured speaker, Gerald M. Crabtree, MD, Professor of Pathology and Developmental Biology and Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator at Stanford University School of Medicine, presented his lecture entitled, “Understanding the Words of Chromatin Remodeling." Dr. Crabtree has made a series of significant discoveries that suggest the potential for medical applications in areas including transplant therapy, diabetes, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer’s disease.
Special guests in attendance included Dr. Bhussry's widow, Rose Mary Greenwood, and her husband, Dr. Stuart Greenwood. Joining them were nieces Cathy Francesca, Marie Francesca, and Michele Lentz and her husband Andrew. Also present were Dr. Thomas Crisp, a colleague of Dr. Bhussry, and his wife, Penny.
