Lombardi's Cancer Survivorship Program Receives Donation from Hyundai Hope on Wheels Tour

September 29, 2008

Aziza Shad and her pediatric patients at Lombardi received a generous helping hand- 13 sets of them, actually- last month at the Hyundai Hope on Wheels Handprint Ceremony when Don Reilly, co-owner of Hyundai in Alexandria, VA., presented Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center with a donation of $40,000 from the 2008 Hyundai Hope on Wheels™ Tour. The donation will support Shad, Chief of the division of pediatric hematology oncology, blood and marrow transplantation, and Lombardi's Cancer Survivorship Program

“We appreciate the commitment that Hyundai and its dealers have shown to supporting the medical professionals who do the vital research that propels us forward in the search for better treatments and ultimately a cure,” said Louis Weiner, Lombardi director.

After the check presentation, the Lombardi patients took turns putting their handprints on a white 2008 Hyundai Santa Fe, to celebrate the lives and treatment milestones of pediatric patients everywhere.

Daniel Shank-Rowe, one of the first patients from Lombardi to put his handprint on the car, said he's grateful for the help of Hyundai and Dr. Shad's team at Lombardi.

"Come to Lombardi if you can. Dr. Shad and the doctors and nurses and art therapists make me forget about cancer," said Shank-Rowe, age 11. He added that staying busy with his hobbies, like building with Legos, has kept him busy and distracted while battling cancer.

The Hope on Wheels Tour completed its 2008 series at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center on September 25. The tour has donated more than $10 million to children’s hospitals nationwide and collected hundreds of handprints from children fighting pediatric cancer. The complete list of 2008 Hope on Wheels Tour stops, including benefiting hospitals, is available here.
