School of Medicine Welcomes Class of 2012 at White Coat Ceremony

August 8, 2008

On August 8, the School of Medicine’s Class of 2012 accepted their white coats and officially embarked on their careers as physicians. The annual “White Coat Ceremony” functions as a rite of passage for students entering medical school and welcomes the newest class to Georgetown as they begin their four-year stay at GUMC. The momentous event was once again held in Gaston Hall, with students walking across the historic stage to be “coated” by members of the Class of 2011 and School of Medicine faculty. This year’s class represents 32 states and two territories, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

After receiving their new coats, the new students introduced themselves to the crowd. Donning their pristine white coats, the 101 men and 93 women joined together to recite the Hippocratic Oath for the first time in front of family, friends and new colleagues at Georgetown, in order to "acknowledge and embrace all privileges and responsibilities of a physician in training and a member of the medical community."

"We are thrilled to welcome such an outstanding group of students to the School of Medicine. They come from a variety of backgrounds and will contribute in many valuable ways to our community in the coming years," said Ray Mitchell, Dean for Medical Education.
