Faculty Recognized at First GUMC Convocation

Six faculty members were recognized for being among the top 5 percent of GUMC faculty receiving federal awards last year:
• Carolyn Hurley, Professor of Oncology and Microbiology & Immunology
• Victoria Jennings, Director, Institute for Reproductive Health and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology
• Chelsea Kidwell, Associate Professor of Neurology
• Jennifer Ng, Professor of Pediatrics
• Sharon Ramey, Director of the Center for Health Education
• Mary Young, Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Disease
Two faculty members were recognized for their extraordinary national recognition and support for their scientific work:
• Jeffrey Toretsky, Associate Professor in the Department of Oncology (Burroughs-Welcome Clinician Scientist Award in Translational Research)
• Zofia Zukowska, Professor and Chair of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics (NIH Merit Award)
Several junior faculty were recognized for receiving initial, significant federal research funding:
• Christopher Albanese, Associate Professor Oncology
• Wenchi Liang, Assistant Professor of Oncology
• Habtom Ressom, Assistant Professor of Oncology
• Aykut Uren, Assistant Professor of Oncology
Three faculty members were recognized for their recent induction into the MAGIS Society:
• William A. Ayers, Professor Emeritus of Medicine
• John S. Dillon, Professor Emeritus of Surgery
• Carlos Suarez-Quian, Professor of Biochemistry, Molecular and Cellular Biology
The two recipients of the Kaiser Permanente Award were recognized:
• Mary A. Furlong, Associate Professor and Program Director of Pathology– for Sustained Excellence in Basic Science Teaching
• John H. Lynch, Professor and Chair of Urology, for Sustained Excellence in Clinical Science Teaching
Joan Riley, Assistant Professor of Nursing, was recognized for receiving The Dorothy Brown Award, the University’s most prestigious award for undergraduate teaching, given to an faculty member whose contributions have helped make Georgetown an academically stimulating campus.
