NIH Public Access Policy Requires Researchers to Follow New Procedures

April 30, 2008

As active members of the NIH research community, many GUMC researchers must now comply with new procedures set forth by the NIH Public Access policy. The new Public Access policy comes from legistlation enacted earlier this year that makes all final, peer-reviewed manuscripts that arise in whole or in part from NIH-funded research available to the public within a year of publication. The procedures require peer-reviewed articles, including research reports and reviews, accepted for publication on or after April 7, 2008, to be electronically deposited in the National Library of Medicine's digital archive of biomedical journal articles, PubMed Central.

"Everyone in the scientific and broader public community stands to benefit from the new NIH Public Access policy, so it's imperative that we all cooperate with NIH and comply with the new procedures. GUMC is known for conducting cutting-edge research, and with the new policy we'll be better able to share our work with others, leading to greater collaboration in the advancement of science," said Sheila Zimmet, Associate Vice President in the Office of Regulatory Affairs.
