2011 Med Reunion—Large and Lively
October 24, 2011
It was sunny and breezy as the 2011 Alumni Reunion Weekend kicked off on October 20 with the second annual Georgetown University School of Medicine (GUMC) Student Scholarship Golf Tournament at the Raspberry Falls Golf and Hunt Club in Leesburg, Virginia. Recipients of the 2011 Student Life Scholarship funds announced at the Tournament Awards Banquet are Iris Leviner (M’12), Colleen Kershaw (M’12), Jenny Van Kirk (M’14), and Nikola Lekic (M’14).
Later that night, Marc Lippman, M.D., former Georgetown faculty member, was honored at the second annual GUMC Legend Reception.
This was one of the largest medical reunions on record, with over 300 alumni in attendance—a total of 500 counting family and guests. The Class of 1961, with 40 percent of the class attending, won The Alumni Cup for attendance. The Class of ’81 won the Reunion Cup for largest gift total, $93,600 so far, and in the process established an M’81 endowed scholarship fund. The Class of Medicine 1956 received the Legacy and the Loyalty Cups.
Highlights included the sounds of “Prescription for Disaster”, associate professor of medicine Joe Timpone’s roots rock student band, which played for the Alumni Family Picnic, and the Carlos Suarez-Quian’s anatomy iPhone app that he showed around to admiring former students.
Meeting with the Class of ‘01, Stephen Ray Mitchell, M.D., Dean for Medical Education, realized that the 10-year class was his first class as a dean—“Of course, they reminded me,” he smiled.
“Sharing [and catching up on] the lives of these [graduates] from 10 years to 60 years out was just richer and more exciting than ever,” says Mitchell. “There is a deep sense of gratitude that runs across that whole range of classes. And you look and see what they’re doing, and the number of them across that whole spectrum who are leaders in medicine, who are teachers, who are out there practicing medicine—it was a rewarding experience for me, a great weekend.”
