School of Medicine Recognizes Faculty with Golden Apple Awards
“We have learned that class of ‘77 was the first Golden Apple Ceremony. So we have come full circle—this is the 31st Golden Apple,” said Stephen Ray Mitchell, M.D., Dean for Medical Education at the School of Medicine. This year’s event was held at the Key Bridge Marriott in Arlington, Va., on Saturday, March 7, with a dinner, awards, speeches, and dancing.
The annual Golden Apple Award is presented by each class of the School of Medicine to a member of the faculty “whose outstanding professional and personal qualities have enhanced the medical education of the members of the class.” This year’s winners are:
Class of 2012: Aviad Haramati, PhD
Class of 2011: Richard A. Gillis, PhD
Class of 2010: Rebecca Evangelista, MD (General Surgery)
Class of 2009: Charles Read, MD (Internal Medicine/Pulmonology)
Dr. Haramati was also named Physiology Professor of the Year.
Each year, as a part of the Golden Apple Award ceremony, the School of Medicine student body presents the John C. Rose Award to a member of the faculty or administration “who has demonstrated outstanding service to the school and has contributed to the improvement of medical education and student life.” This year’s winner is David L. Taylor, interactive learning specialist.
Georgetown medical students nominate each year those residents whom they consider to have been the best teachers for a "String of Pearls" nomination. Among the nominees, one resident is selected as the "Mother of Pearl" award winner. This year’s winner is Ram Srinivasan, a resident in the Department of Internal Medicine.
Win the Golden Apple three times and you become a member of the Golden Orchard. The newest Golden Orchard Inductee: Yvonne Hernandez, PhD, from the Department of Pharmacology.
Philip Borges, MD, from the Department of Urology at Virginia Hospital Center was this year’s Affiliate Award winner.
Students recognized included Hahn Soe-Lin (M’12) and Meghan Murphy (M’11), who won the Professionalism Awards and the following HOYA Clinic volunteers:
