GU Women in Medicine Announce Annual Award Winners

Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) faculty members Aziza Shad   (left) and Phyllis Magrab were among the many women recognized at the annual awards reception hosted by Georgetown Women in Medicine (GWIM) on December 4.

This fall marked the inauguration of GWIM's new Outstanding Achievement Award, designed to recognize a female faculty member within GUMC or Georgetown University Hospital who has demonstrated outstanding achievement through her research, education or service, who is recognized at a national or international level, and who has also contributed to the Georgetown community. The committee selected Zofia Zukowska, chair of physiology and biophysics, and Phyllis Magrab, founder and director of the Center for Child and Human Development, as this year's co-winners. Additionally, Aziza Shad, professor of pediatrics and oncology, accepted the Estelle Ramey Mentorship Award for her experiences as a mentor to her colleagues.

GWIM first hosted their awards ceremony in 2000, and since then the organization and its awards and funding have only grown. Kate Taylor, president of GWIM and associate professor at Lombardi, thinks interest in GWIM has grown in recent years because of the increased number of faculty development programs it has been able to offer. She also credits the organization for being accessible to faculty of all levels, which provides junior faculty with exposure to academic role models among the GWIM leadership.

"All women faculty are welcome to become involved at any level they wish, and we have equal numbers of faculty, from basic science to clinical, who are actively involved. GWIM gives women faculty the opportunity to get to know other faculty at GUMC who they otherwise might not meet," explained Taylor.
