The Five-Year M.D. Research Track Program offers students in the School of Medicine the opportunity to complete an intensive twelve-month research period between the second and third year of the standard medical school curriculum.  During this period, students do not pay tuition and are provided with stipend support.  The stipend during this period is shared 50% by the mentoring faculty member, and 50% by the Office of Biomedical Graduate Education.  Acceptance into the Five-Year M.D. Research Track Program does not constitute an agreement to work with any specific member of the Georgetown University faculty.

The program is augmented by summer research rotations in the summers prior to matriculation and between the first and second year of Medical School.  These rotations are viewed as a vital component of the program designed to provide a foundation for the primary research period.  Stipend support is also provided during the summer rotations, which average about six weeks each summer.

The student may conduct summer rotations and the research portion of the program in his or her choice of available laboratories within the following departments and programs:

  • Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
  • Department of Cell Biology
  • Department of Microbiology and Immunology
  • Department of Pharmacology
  • Department of Physiology and Biophysics
  • Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience
  • Interdisciplinary Program in Tumor Biology
  • The Center for Clinical Bioethics

A number of clinical faculty hold secondary appointments in the above listed Basic Science Departments, or participate in the above listed Interdisciplinary Programs, making them available as well for research opportunities.
