Founded in 1789, Georgetown University is the oldest Catholic Jesuit institution of higher education in the United States. The University and its Medical Center are located in the Georgetown area of Washington, DC, a small historic community of cobblestone streets, fine shops, and restaurants.

Washington is one of the world's most diverse and intellectually exciting cities. Policy decisions, often of major significance for health care and science, are debated here daily in many arenas. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) in nearby Bethesda, Maryland are internationally renowned for biomedical research and sophisticated technological development. The Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, the Naval Medical Research Institute, and the National Library of Medicine are other significant resources unique to the University's Washington, DC location.

The nation's capital abounds in cultural and social opportunities. The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is only minutes from the University. Beautiful parks, trails and gardens scattered throughout the Washington metropolitan area offer countless settings for outdoor recreational activities. The Joseph Hirshhorn Museum, the National Gallery of Art with its striking East Wing, the Holocaust Museum, the National Air and Space Museum and the other components of the Smithsonian Institution, which constitute the world's largest museum complex, are only a few examples of the cultural riches enjoyed by Washingtonians.
