Dr. Zasloff has accepted an 18-month appointment to oversee biomedical research and its translation from the laboratory to patient care.
"As Dean of Research and Translational Science, Dr. Zasloff will lead the Medical Center's pursuit of 21st century biomedical opportunities, and the methods of discovery and collaboration necessary to sustain the high quality research for which Georgetown has long been known," said University President John J. DeGioia.
Dr. Zasloff has served as chief of the human genetics branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, has held positions at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Pennsylvania medical schools, and is the founder of the company formerly known as Magainin Pharmaceuticals, a publicly traded biotechnology company in Plymouth Meeting, Penn.
"I think it vitally important that a medical school play a significant role in taking therapeutics and diagnostics from the bench into clinical use," said Dr. Zasloff. "The strengths of the Georgetown University Medical Center, combined with the facilities and expertise of the MedStar hospital system, put us in a unique position to develop an exciting new model for productive collaboration between basic science, medical research, and clinical medicine in an academic setting."
Dr. Zasloff has published more than 100 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals and holds 40 patents. His research has focused on the study of the immune systems of frogs, sharks and other animals, the application of this knowledge to the human immune system, and the development of drugs based on this research.
