HHS Sec. Tommy Thompson Visits Georgetown to Discuss
Nursing Shortage, Announce New Funding for Nursing Education


Washington, D.C. — U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson joins Georgetown University School of Nursing and Health Studies Dean Bette Keltner, RN, PhD, FAAN, today at an event at Georgetown University to discuss the national shortage of nurses and the critical role played by men and women in the nursing profession. Secretary Thompson will announce $27.4 million in grants to universities, colleges and other organizations to address the nursing shortage and to support nursing education. Of that amount, Georgetown University will receive $595,470 this year in Advanced Education Nursing Grants for the School of Nursing and Health Studies.

Secretary Thompson and Dean Keltner will be joined by Georgetown University nursing students and faculty as well as nurses from Georgetown University Hospital.

In addition to Secretary Thompson and Dean Keltner, speakers at today's event include:

  • Lana Gregoriev, fourth-year student, School of Nursing and Health Studies
  • Melissa Velasquez, critical care nurse, Burn Unit, Washington Hospital Center
  • Patricia Underwood, PhD, RN, First Vice President, American Nurses Association
