Washington, D.C. Sen. Don Nickles (R-Okla.) and Sen. William Frist (R-Tenn.)-well accustomed to running for office-are now putting those skills to a different use: running to benefit the Lombardi Cancer Center. The senators, along with staff members and friends, have teamed up to form the "Nickles-Frist Pace Makers." The team is now in training to prepare for the October 28th Marine Corps Marathon as part of the Lombardi Cancer Center's "Team Lombardi," which will raise money for cancer research.
A dedicated runner, Nickles is combining his fitness and philanthropic interests by participating in his first marathon as a member of Team Lombardi. "The Lombardi Cancer Center is one the nation's premier facilities for research, education and treatment of cancer," Nickles said. "Team Lombardi gives us a chance to combine our interest in running with our interest in helping this great organization fight cancer. Team Lombardi is a fantastic way to make a difference."
Frist, participating in his fourth Marine Corps Marathon, is determined to use his experience to make a difference. "As an avid runner and a medical doctor, this year's marathon will be of particular interest to me as the team works together to support this tremendous organization. I'm hopeful that through our efforts, Team Lombardi will be able to raise significant contributions to help the Center continue its groundbreaking work."
The Marine Corps Marathon, which is the fourth largest marathon in the nation, is now in its 26th year. It regularly attracts more than 16,000 runners, and all spots in the 2001 race are currently taken. However, there are still spots left on "Team Lombardi" for interested runners. Each member of Team Lombardi is asked to raise $2,000, and will receive education and information to help them reach this goal. In addition, participants also have the opportunity to work with a running coach who holds weekly training sessions and practice runs on Saturday mornings, and who can help the runners devise personal training programs geared toward their ability level.
