"Dr. Gaintner brings to Georgetown more than thirty years of leadership experience in dealing with the complexities of academic medicine and the coordination of its educational, research and clinical missions," said Georgetown University president John J. DeGioia. "We anticipate that his efforts will greatly increase our momentum in securing a strong future for Georgetown's Medical Center, and will help realize the potential that exists in the Georgetown-MedStar partnership."

Most recently, Dr. Gaintner was CEO of Shands HealthCare, the major teaching and research hospital system affiliate of the University of Florida's Health Science Center. Prior to that, he was Chief Executive Officer of New England Deaconess Hospital, one of Harvard's major teaching hospitals. He has also served as Associate Dean for Administration at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and, later, Deputy Director of the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Gaintner is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Lehigh University. He is professor emeritus at Harvard Medical School.

"Georgetown is an internationally renowned University, and I am pleased that I have been asked to play a role in the positive evolution of its Medical Center," said Dr. Gaintner. "I look forward to working closely with President DeGioia, Medical Center and MedStar leaders, and the entire Georgetown University community."
