Washington, D.C. Edmund Pellegrino, MD, John Carroll Professor of Medicine and Medical Ethics at Georgetown University Medical Center's Center for Clinical Bioethics, will be honored March 25 with the Marymount University Ethics Award for his lifelong devotion to compassion and medical ethics.
This award, which is sponsored by the University's Center for Ethical Concerns, recognizes an individual whose commitment and example serve as a model for others in creating a strong values-based culture in his or her field. Award recipients are chosen based on their personal leadership in assuring that high moral values are an integral component of the daily actions of their colleagues and associates.
"Marymount University takes great pleasure in honoring Dr. Pellegrino for his vision and leadership in fostering medical ethics," said Marymount President James E. Bundschuh, PhD. "Dr. Pellegrino has shown outstanding dedication to safeguarding the patient-physician relationship. He has been a champion of ethics in the medical profession and, particularly, has focused on furthering understanding of the ethical issues arising from biomedical advances. He sets an outstanding example for others to follow."
The only two other recipients of this award are Norman R. Augustine, honored in 1998 for establishing a model corporate ethics program while he was chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin Corporation, and Sir John M. Templeton, a Wall Street legend and philanthropist who through the John Templeton Foundation supports initiatives that promote spiritual and ethical development.
Pellegrino is nationally and internationally renowned for his work in the field of medical ethics. The founding editor of the Journal of Medicine and Philosophy, Pellegrino has written more than 500 published articles on scientific research, medical education and philosophy, and has written or co-written 17 books. Pellegrino has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Laetare Medal from the Univerisity of Notre Dame, and has been awarded 40 honorary doctorates. His research interests include the history and philosophy of medicine, professional ethics, and the physician-patient relationship.
