Washington, D.C. Bruce D. Cheson, MD, FACP, has been appointed professor of medicine, Head of Hematology, and Director of Hematology Research at Lombardi Cancer Center at Georgetown University Medical Center.

"We are delighted that Bruce will be coming to Georgetown and Lombardi," said Kevin Cullen, MD, acting director of Lombardi. "He is an internationally recognized leader in the field of hematologic malignancies. His distinguished career has put him in the lead in developing new therapies for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. He is an outstanding clinician, researcher and teacher, and is a tremendous addition to our faculty."
Cheson's clinical interests focus on the development and evaluation of new therapeutic approaches for hematologic malignancies. Most recently, he was Head of the Medicine Section for the National Cancer Institute's Clinical Investigations Branch within the Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program, and senior staff physician in the NCI's Lymphoma Clinic. Prior to that, Cheson was assistant professor of medicine in hematology/oncology at the University of Utah. Cheson is a graduate of the University of Virginia and Tufts University School of Medicine. From 1995 until his recent faculty appointment, he was a Clinical Professor of Medicine (hematology/oncology) at Georgetown.
Cheson has authored more than 300 medical publications and abstracts, and has contributed to over 40 texts. He is on the editorial board of numerous journals and is associate editor of the
Journal of Clinical Oncology,
Oncology, and
Oncology News International. He is an editor-in-chief of
Clinical Lymphoma. He has also been the editor of the American College of Physicians Medical Knowledge Assessment Program in Oncology.
He has served on several committees of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, was on its board of directors, and edits ASCO News. Cheson is a board member of the Lymphoma Research Foundation and is also on the Oncologic Drug Advisory Committee to the Food and Drug Administration.
