Washington, D.C. — Lombardi Cancer Center is recruiting 200 runners and walkers
from the Georgetown community—faculty, staff, and students—and the DC Metro
area to participate in the 2001 Marine Corps MarathonTM as part
of the inaugural Team Lombardi.
The
MarathonTM, which is the fourth largest in the nation and is
now in its 26th year, will take place on Sunday, October 28, 2001. Team
Lombardi will start and end the race at the Marine Corps War Memorial in
Arlington.
Each
member of Team Lombardi is required to raise a minimum of $2,000, which
will benefit the Lombardi Cancer Center. Participants will receive a fundraiser
training packet and orientation classes to help raise the money. Participants
receive a detailed training schedule that is geared toward their specific
ability level, and are guided by their coaches who will work with them
throughout the program. Participants train on their own through the week,
following a detailed training schedule, while participating in group runs
with others on the weekends. The three orientation meetings give interested
runners a chance to meet with the trainers and Lombardi development staff
and will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1; Monday, May 7; and Tuesday,
May 15. Refreshments will be served. All meetings are in the
Research Building Auditorium, 3970 Reservoir Road, NW, Washington, DC 20007.
