Washington, D.C. David Fleischer, M.D., and Kathy Maher, R.N., both of Georgetown University Hospital's Gastroenterology Department, received two of the most prestigious awards given in the field of gastroenterology last month--marking the first time that the awards have gone to two health professionals from the same institution.
The American Society for Gastrointenstinal Endoscopy awarded Fleischer the Rudolf Schindler award during the group's annual meeting in May. First issued in 1954, the award is presented annually to doctors who epitomize the standards and traditions in the areas of endoscopic research, teaching, and service to the Society. Fleischer is currently professor of Medicine and chief of the Endoscopy Unit. He also serves as a consultant to the National Institutes of Health.
Maher was presented with the Gabriella Schindler Award by the Society of Gastrointestinal Nurses and Associates (SGNA) during its annual meeting in Anaheim, Calif. in May. The SGNA is the largest international meeting for nurses. Maher has more than 28 years of experience as a nurse. In 1985 she became the Clinical Studies Coordinator, Esophageal Studies Section in the Division of Gastroenterology at Georgetown and has become widely known as a leader in the field.
"Georgetown University is proud to have two of the best gastroenterology professionals working hand in hand providing the best care possible to their patients," said Dr. Stanley Benjamin, Division Chief of Gastroenterology.
