Washington, D.C. A group of approximately 50 seventh graders from Hardy Middle School in Washington, DC and their teachers will take part in Brain Awareness Week, organized by the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives. The Dana Alliance is supported by the Charles A. Dana Foundation, a private, philanthropic organization with interests in neuroscience and education.
By spending the day at Georgetown University Medical Center, the students will observe how the brain and nervous systems are studied by meeting neuroscientists and touring onsite research laboratories. In the morning, the students will have a question and answer session with Dr. Karen Gale, professor of Pharmacology and director of the Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience at Georgetown University Medical Center. After lunch the students will tour the labs, working directly with graduate students and faculty.
Brain Awareness Week was created in order to advance public awareness of brain research. Dr. Gale also sees it as an opportunity for the students to see what it’s like to be a neuroscientist. “We hope to give the students a sense of the fun we have studying something as important as the brain.”
